Why do I paint these chairs?

I am trained as an artist with extensive studies in art history, but, prior to COVID, my livelihood has been planning special events for nonprofits. I like to find chairs that speak to me of a certain time, a certain artist.

My style has evolved over the past 30+ years. The early chairs are simpler: a portrait, another painting or design on the back of the seat and brightly colored legs. After a while, the chairs became more decorative with nearly every surface covered in images and patterns from the artist's work or the era. I found a company that has fabulous artist-inspired fabric for upholstered seats.

I have another business—Primarily Portraits—that matches portrait subjects with artists who can make them immortal. For me, portraits are always front of mind. So, when I needed a dining table and chairs, I made a table out of a door and went to used-furniture stores and gathered up a bunch of lonely chairs. One day, sitting at the table, I thought it might be fun to paint portraits on the chairs so I could eat dinner with fascinating people. It was so much fun! I kept painting, even when my dining room was full. Actually, I couldn’t stop. Now, I have a studio in my Silicon Valley garage where I work. So many incredible things have been born in garages here!

Please note that some of these are samples which can be custom ordered, while others are available for sale. I love collaborating with a customer on a special order. Thanks for stopping by; I hope you enjoy the work!
